The Museum of the Moving Image is in a former Astoria Studios building in Queens, New York City. The museum opened in 1988 as the American Museum of the Moving Image and opened “Behind the Screen” in 1996. The museum reopened in 2011 after a $67 million expansion. Thomas Leeser designed the expansion.
The Moving Image Museum focuses on film, TV, and digital media art, history, technique, and technology. It collects, preserves, and exhibits moving-image artifacts for educational purposes. The exhibits include audio/visual components to explain the industry’s history and evolution. The museum often hosts film panels. The museum’s premium theaters host monthly series. “Changing the Picture,” “Fist & Sword,” “New Adventures in Nonfiction,” “Science on Screen,” and “Disreputable Cinema” Each explores and celebrates cinematic art and culture. It has a large collection of video games and gaming hardware. The museum’s attendance is expected to reach 120,000 in 2011. The museum opened “The Jim Henson Exhibition” in 2017 to honor his life and creations. Envisioning 2001: Stanley Kubrick’s Space Odyssey opened in 2020.
